fumble was picked up by #44 for the Ridge defense at the 32 yard line. Dion Sink and the offense
would capitalize as Sink hit Anthony Gamble on a 41 yard touchdown strike. The Sink/Gamble
connection would strike again this time for a 14 yard touchdown. Dion Sink would score one more time
on a four yard rushing TD. The halftime score was 19-0 Ridge.
Northland came out in the second half ready to play some tough defense. Though Sink and Ridge
were able to make some big plays in the second half they were unable to put any more points on the
board. Sam Ricks of Northland had an interception and a fumble recovery in the second half.
The Ridge defense was ready to hit as well not allowing any points again in the second half. The
defensive highlight would have to be the goal line stand Ridge put together to keep Northland out of
the end zone, secure the shutout and assure the victory.
Coach Mattox and Coach Tooson are former coaches at Beechcroft high school, so this was somewhat
of a reunion for the two. Mattox and Tooson both have great programs going and I expect their teams
to be involved in several hard hitting games in the future.
I had the chance to speak with Coach Mattox after the game. When asked about the goal line stand
and the shut out, Mattox said, "we take it as a personal thing to not allow points... our kids have been
responding to our coaching, it showed on the field and they did everything we asked of them." Mattox
is known for being a defensive master mind and you can see his fingerprints all over the defense. "We
want to get a shutout every time we step on the field."
Next week the (1-1) Scotts travel to Brookhaven to play the (0-2) Bearcats. When asked did he carry
any of the bitterness from the Beechcroft vs Brookhaven rivalry over to Ridge, Coach Mattox replied,
"any time you play Brookhaven it's a big game... Ridge and Brookhaven have had some great battles
over the years; we are gonna come out, do the best we can and see what happens."
