Eastmoor 20 - Walnut Ridge 8
The Eastmoor Warriors kept the victory bell for yet another season after Friday
night's victory over the Scots of Walnut Ridge. The Ridge defense focused on
stopping Eastmoor tailback Isaiah Pead, but it was other Warriors that
stepped up their game.
The Warrior defense held Walnut Ridge scoreless in the first half to lead
18-0, after a Kwesi Sample field goal and two Pead rushing touchdowns. In
the second half the Eastmoor "D" continued to thrive, scoring a safety. The
lone Walnut Ridge touchdown was scored late in the third when Alvin Busbee
connected with Thomas Douglas for a 5 yard touchdown pass.
Though Pead was held to only 76 yards he still made his presence felt with
an interception on defense and an entertaining kick off return. Noticing Ridge
was keying on Pead, Eastmoor wisely gave the ball to Vince Williams and
Aaron Flowe, who both had several impressive rushes. Junior quarterback
Ma'lon Johnson improved his record as a starter to a perfect 6-0. Johnson
and junior receiver Alex Coleman connected on two big pass plays in the
game, one of those coming in the fourth quarter which helped seal the game.
Whetstone 42 - Linden 3
It was the depth on the bench that helped Whetstone pound Linden into
submission with a 42-3 victory. Most of the game belonged to Whetstone
who constantly ran #5 quarterback Mario Dovell for several TDs.
At the end of the first half the Panthers put together a great run. Completing a
great pass and then following it up with several ground plays put Linden first
and goal. But then an interception turned over the ball and killed the push.
The second half also belonged to Whetstone with more completed plays and
holding on to the ball longer. To their credit many of the Linden players found
themselves playing both ways; which had to take a lot out of them.
Whetstone, on the other side, has one of the largest teams they have been
able to field in the past several years. This allowed them plenty of subs
throughout the game keeping their players able to maintain pressure both
offensively and defensively.
Independence 19 - Briggs 7
Two teams are heading in two different directions. After starting the season
3-0 Africentric has lost it's last three games while after starting 0-3
Independence has won it's last three games.
Africentric stormed off to an early lead behind a 33 yard Victor Graham
touchdown run. Independence immediately answered when Andrey Peake
returned the kick off 90 yards for a touchdown and the Nubians never
recovered.
Last season's league leader in rushing yards, Luther Nicholas, seems to be
back on track after racking up 178 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns.
Beechcroft 54 - East 12
Beechcroft keeps pace with Northland and Brookhaven, among the
undefeated in City League North play, by soundly beating the East Tigers.
The Cougars were led by Wallace Hale's 133 rushing yards and Marvin
Stewart's three passing touchdowns.
The win makes next week's rivalry game with Brookhaven very interesting.
The winner of that game will be in the driver's seat to win the City League
North.
Brookhaven 49 - Centennial 14
The Bearcats of Brookhaven once again hopped aboard the Rodney Stewart
express. By the time they hopped off they were leading 49-0. Centennial
added two scores in the fourth quarter. Both Star's touchdowns were scored
by Anthony Aulette, one of them coming on a defensive fumble recovery.
For the Bearcats, Stewart finished with 224 yards and 7 touchdowns on just
12 carries. Next week is the big game versus Northside rival, Beechcroft.
Northland 56 - Mifflin 8
Mainly known for their strong defense, the Northland defense is putting up
some very impressive offensive numbers. In just the last two weeks, the
Vikings have scored a total of 129 points while only giving up 15. That is
definitely a recipe for success.
This week they had a balanced attack with running backs Alfred Geiger and
Chris Tucker, topping 100 yards. Senior quarterback Ben Bennett threw for
125 yards.
On defense, the Vikings were led by Ed Dunaway's two interceptions. Only a
junior, Dunaway is a rising star in the league, who also had an 11 tackle
performance earlier in the year against Newark.
Briggs 15 - South 6
After not recording a win the last two seasons and failing to score a
touchdown thus far this season, the Briggs football season got a boost. Not
only did the Bruins score, they put up 15 points and held South to just 6.
Translation, a much deserved win for a great group of kids.
Dominique Chandler started off the scoring for South with a one yard
touchdown run. That would be their only score of the game. Briggs scored
on Tyler Gates and Tommy Bridgeman touchdown runs and a safety.
This win is the type that can help this very young Bruin team bring the football
program back to contend in the City South.

Marion Franklin 47 - West 24
The Marion Franklin Red Devils continue their dominance of the City
League South, by jumping out on West 47-6. West would score three
fourth quarter touchdown to make the score look more respectable.
West was led by super sophomore quarterback Eric Stewart, who threw
for 307 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Marion Franklin was led by seniors Bobby Harris (105 rushing yards) and
Jeremy Hill (163 passing yards). Next up for the Red Devils is a
blistering hot Eastmoor team. Eastmoor has not beat Marion Franklin
since the 2003 season.
