2006-'07 Season
12/3/2006

Columbus, Ohio – In 1929, the schools in Columbus— Aquinas, East, North and West---hosted an
“all-city” tournament. From those auspicious beginnings grew a tournament encompassing fourteen
of the sixteen schools.  In 2007, an old favorite is back, pushed by up to four challenging squads.
We see an emergence of a brand new team, Africentric, and new coaching staffs within a half dozen
programs.  Many look at the 2006-2007 season as a down year, but that just isn’t the case. Overall,
numbers are up and the talent pool, especially in the light-middle weights, is EXCEPTIONAL.

Let’s talk team race.  Marion-Franklin was second in 2006 during Derek Oney’s inaugural year as
skipper for the Red Devils.  He has a tremendous staff and has built great off-season interest.
Marion-Franklin has nearly fifty wrestlers out for the squad and are the early-season favorite.  215-
pounder Kenny Bidlack is a hammer, but watch for Palmer and Ryman in the middle.

In 2006, West won their first title since the 1940’s, holding off Marion-Franklin 273-237.  Gone,
however, are four individual league champions.  A new coaching staff, led by former Eastmoor
Assistant Dan Ritchie, is primed for a repeat performance.  The team has a new wrestling room and
a core group of strong seniors to reload around.  Shawn Beard and Darryl Tucker were both runner-
ups in 2006, while getting champ Ahmad Jilo back on the mat is essential.

Whetstone is secretly stacked.  Bob Triano, who won a state team title at Desales in the 1970’s, has
stepped into the head-coaching role for the Braves.  Triano is also the Athletic Director at
Whetstone.  Four talented freshmen supplant two-time champ and District placer Matt Tuttle.

Northland was 3rd on 2006 but lost some points.  Coach Hawk has built a fine team, anchored
around Bingham at 160.  Runner-up Mike Austin is a big-point scorer and is dangerous.

Watch for East High as they move up the charts.  Two bonafide studs exists in D’Von Brice 9125-
130) and Darryl Solis (140).  Emerging star Swanson will help Coach John William’s team make a
push.

Coach Frank Valero’s Brigg’s Bruins are experienced and deep.  Gabby Henry (103-112), Leo Bell
(125) and Casey Murphy (215) are all threats to move in the post-season.

Centennial is led by Mark Shaeffer and features City runner-up Downing at 140/145.  The program
has been on the upswing with huge numbers last year.  Expect more of the same.

Linden McKinley possesses a bonafide stud in 103-pounder Aaron Eiseman.  One match away from
state last season, he should take that next step this year for Coach Eric Stone.

The Haven and Coach Ayers are anchored by surprise City winner Harley Deaton at 145.  Seeded
4th at the League, Deaton recorded numerous upsets including a fall in the finals.

Mike Pechec takes over the Cougars, giving the 'Croft their 3rd coach in three years.  City champ
Travis Coates moves two weights to 171 and Parem-Singh returns to improve on his 4th at 215.

Former Beechcroft coach Chuck Stewart is in his 1st year at Walnut Ridge, and the team is deep but
inexperienced.  135 pounder Jones is solid and capable of making the finals.

A great surprise is the fielding of  a new squad at Africentric.  Head football coach Glen Blue has
been an active proponent of wrestling/football crossover and has taken it into his own hands as the
new head wrestling coach.  Admittedly, they are young, but numbers are good. 103 Marshall could
surprise, but keep your eye on Smoot at 171.

Eastmoor Academy, Mifflin and South are all apparently fielding teams, but little information has been
available.  Eastmoor's staff is now at West, but they return a solid group.  Mifflin and South did not
field teams in 2005-06.  As always, I continue to be astounded by the Independence...huge and
successful in sports...and their inability to field a team.
